It’s mind-boggling how many people wade into university politics without first understanding the statutes that govern these institutions.

Here are the facts:
- Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu was appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University on November 20, 2024, for a tenure of six months.
- His tenure is set to expire on May 20, 2025.
- In line with procedure, the Governing Council requested the convening of the University Senate to nominate five qualified professors. From this list, the Council is expected to appoint a new Acting Vice-Chancellor.
- The Senate was convened on May 15, 2025. Nominations were made, and an election was conducted, resulting in the shortlisting of three professors:
Prof. A.U. Nonyelu

Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi
Prof. Ada Sam-Omenyi
- The Governing Council will meet on Friday, 16th May, 2025 to appoint the most qualified of the three as Acting Vice-Chancellor.
- Note: None of these nominated professors would be eligible to contest for the substantive position. So, any one appointed by Council would just serve on acting capacity and handover to a substantive Vice-Chancellor later on.
