UNIZIK: Appointment of Acting Vice-Chancellor

It’s mind-boggling how many people wade into university politics without first understanding the statutes that govern these institutions.

Here are the facts:

  1. Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu was appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University on November 20, 2024, for a tenure of six months.
  2. His tenure is set to expire on May 20, 2025.
  3. In line with procedure, the Governing Council requested the convening of the University Senate to nominate five qualified professors. From this list, the Council is expected to appoint a new Acting Vice-Chancellor.
  4. The Senate was convened on May 15, 2025. Nominations were made, and an election was conducted, resulting in the shortlisting of three professors:

Prof. A.U. Nonyelu

Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi

Prof. Ada Sam-Omenyi

  1. The Governing Council will meet on Friday, 16th May, 2025 to appoint the most qualified of the three as Acting Vice-Chancellor.
  2. Note: None of these nominated professors would be eligible to contest for the substantive position. So, any one appointed by Council would just serve on acting capacity and handover to a substantive Vice-Chancellor later on.
