The Tricycle (Keke) Operators Nnewi took Laws into their hands: Police intervened, some Nnewi youths resisted them


Some group of Keke Napep drivers killed an innocent man and several others wounded in their bid to avenge the alleged death of one of their colleagues.

An eye witness who was at the scene of the accident late Tuesday night on Oba Okigwe expressway near the Gulf Filling station at Otolo Nnewi, narrated the incident to Vision Newspapers.

She said that the Keke driver had an head-on-collision with a driver of a new Mercedes E class sedan . The driver took the Keke operator to the hospital near the Nnewi Traffic light junction for treatment.

The driver detailed a security guard to watch over the Mercedes while he took the Keke operator to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the news of the accident got to some of the militant group among the Keke operators yesterday morning being Wednesday. They mobilized and went to the site of the accident with all manner of dangerous weapons.

On sighting the damaged vehicle, these militant operators smashed the vehicle to pieces. The eyewitness said that the security hired to watch the vehicle tried to reason with them, they turned around and used machetes to cut his head open.

Some body took the lifeless body of the young security man to the hospital, only for the militants to follow them there. At the hospital near the Traffic Light, the militants also learnt that their colleague did not survive the accident. The militants were bent on finding the driver to send him to death as well. They also smashed another Mercedes Jeep to pieces which they believed belong to the driver, before they proceeded to the Central Police Station (CPS) Nnewi.

They tried to overwhelm the police at the Nnewi CPS, but the officers resisted and beat them back. Some of the militants may have suffered some degree of wounds, even fatality.

The Ndiakwu village youth in Otolo Nnewi mobilized and confiscated some of their Keke. They said that if it was up to them that the Keke operators should stop be allowed to continue working in Nnewi. “These people are so violent and several people have lost their lives at their hands over minor issues.”

These notorious Keke operatprs have formed the habit of using dangerous weapons on people, and even, marching into communities to maim people. On of the youth leaders said that most of the operators from Ebonyi State have formed the habit of using Machete on people, including private vehicle owners. “We can’t tolerate it any more.”
