Again, gunmen kill five in fresh Plateau attack

Still reeling from the gruesome killings of over 160 people in Bokkos and Barakin-Ladi local government areas of Plateau State, gunmen struck again in Kwahaslalek community in Mangu local government area of the state and killed three people.

Another three people were also reportedly killed in Durbi village in the Shere District of the Jos East local government area of the state.

After the Bokkos and Barakin-Ladi incidents, there was a threat by the terrorists to launch a fresh attack on some communities in the state during the New Year celebration and after, thus causing apprehension in the state.

A source told the Nigerian Tribune that the gunmen on Saturday, at about 10:40 p.m., attacked the Kwahaslalek community area and unleashed terror on the inhabitants.

It was gathered that the attack, which lasted for more than 45 minutes, resulted in the deaths of three people while five others sustained fatal injuries, adding that the marauders also destroyed valuables before they bolted away.

The source further disclosed that the three people who lost their lives were given mass burials at about 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, while those who sustained injuries are receiving treatment at the Mangu General Hospital.

Also, there was another attack in Durbi village in Shere District of Jos East Council, where a father and son were shot dead by gunmen who invaded the village.

The Transition Implementation Committee Chairman of the Council, Mr Markus Nyam, who confirmed the incident, said the marauders invaded the village on Saturday night and killed a father and son, adding that the efforts of the vigilantes in the area paid off when they succeeded in killing one of the assailants.

He added that the prompt response of the joint security task force, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), prevented the attackers from causing more mayhem.

However, the spokesman of Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, said the Jos East incident was an attempt to kidnap one of the residents of the area, contrary to the position being held that it was an attack on the local government.

Alabo, who maintained that two people died, said the police were called to the scene and responded appropriately, adding that they were able to repel the kidnappers.

He also confirmed the attack at Kwahaslalek community, Mangu local government, adding men of the command on the ground engaged attackers and foiled their plan.

The State Commissioner of Information, Mr Musa Ashoms, enjoined the people of the state to be more vigilant and report any suspicious moves in their community to the law enforcement agencies for prompt action.
