A stalwart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Anambra State, Hon. Obiora Anichebe Oko, has urged Gov Charles Soludo to expedite action in the conduct of the Local Government election for the state.
He noted that the conduct of the LGA election in the state is over due following Gov Soludo’s promise to Ndi – Anambra during his electioneering campaign.
Hon. Oko, pointed out that the conduct of much awaited LGA polls would afford the people at the grassroots the opportunity to choose candidates of their choice as Chairmen and Councillors who would man the affairs of the council areas for 3 years as enshrined in 1999 constitution as amended.
He stated that the recent Supreme Court Judgement which granted the Local Governments autonomy in Nigeria was in tandem with people’s desires with a view to saving the LGAs in the Country from going into extinction.
The PDP stalwart who said that it was the LGA that knows where it pitches them maintained that the best practices should have been allowing their allocations go to them directly rather than passing through middlemen governors .
He added that the elected LGAS have a lot of responsibilities especially in the area of construction of feeder roads and other projects that would take government closer to the people at the grassroots.
Hon Oko said that the Supreme Court Judgement would no doubt usher in a better development across the country.
He applauded the proposed workshop for the LGA staffers and the traditional rulers in the country noting that is a welcone development.
