Sweet Home African Humanitarian Foundation Expresses Dissatisfaction, Disappointment With ANSIEC Over LGA Election Outcome

From Ifeoma Ejiofor

The Founder of Sweet Home African Humanitarian Foundation, Rev. Austin Epunam (JP) has expressed the organization’s utmost dissatisfaction and disappointment with the outcome of the recent local government elections conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).

The position of the group was contained in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.

The statement reads, “Despite our efforts to ensure a free, fair, and credible election as independent observers, the commission’s actions have fallen short of expectations.

“We are deeply troubled that no elections were held in the entire communities that make up Otolo-Nnewi, Ward 1, yet results were announced, and a winner emerged. This blatant disregard for democratic processes undermines the integrity and trust in the government and electoral institutions. Our foundation had formally written to ANSIEC prior to the election to serve as independent observers, but our efforts were disregarded.

“Furthermore, I am saddened by the police brutality meted out against a physically challenged person who contested to serve his people in the capacity of a councillor. This act of brutality is a stark reminder of the systemic problems that perpetuate violence and discrimination against vulnerable groups.

“It is unacceptable that individuals with disabilities, who already face significant barriers to participation, should be subjected to such treatment.

“The lack of transparency and accountability in the electoral process is alarming. As a humanitarian organization, we are committed to promoting democratic values and ensuring that the rights of citizens are respected. The actions of ANSIEC have betrayed the trust of the people and compromised the legitimacy of the election.

“We urge ANSIEC to take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure that future elections are conducted in a fair, transparent, and credible manner. The people of Anambra State deserve nothing less. We also call on the relevant authorities to investigate this matter and hold those responsible accountable.”

The group in her three points demand called for investigation and prosecution of police brutality and electoral malpractice, as well as ensuring electoral process that is fair and transparent and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

“As we continue to advocate for democratic principles and good governance, we remain committed to supporting the people of Anambra State in their quest for free and fair elections,” Rev Epunam asserted.
