UNIZIK MDCAN hails Tinubu for swift action over VC selection

The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital expressed its heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the Permanent Secretary of Education Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu for their swift action regarding the recent Vice-Chancellor selection process at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

According to a statement signed by the Chairman MDCAN, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Dr Victor Modekwe, the decisive action taken to nullify the VC selection underscores the government’s commitment to upholding transparency and integrity in our educational institutions.

This intervention, he said, is not only a testament to the responsiveness of the administration but also a significant step toward restoring confidence among stakeholders in the academic community.

“Meanwhile, the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) strongly condemns the actions and character of the superimposed Registrar, Barr. Rosemary Nwokike, particularly in her recent correspondence with the Ministry of Education.”

“Barr. Nwokike claimed that there was no formal meeting between the ProChancellor and the Minister of State for Education, only informal discussions with the Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.”

“She emphasized that these discussions do not override the enforceability of a court judgment requiring the Council to appoint the Vice-Chancellor.

“In her response to concerns about the absence of the Ministry’s representative during the appointment meeting on October 29, 2024, she claimed that all necessary protocols were followed.”

“The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) asserts hat Barr. Nwokike is acting without the necessary resolution from the Council.”

“As the secretary to both the Council and the Senate, she lacks the authority to respond to the Permanent Secretary’s letter without a formal meeting or resolution. This raises the question: on whose authority is she writing?”

“Furthermore, the Registrar is not a personal secretary to the Pro-Chancellor or the Vice-Chancellor. By positioning herself in this way, she diminishes the dignity of her office and appears to act as a “private/confidential secretary” rather than fulfilling her responsibilities as a public servant.”

“Additionally, it is troubling that the appointed Registrar’s relationship to the Pro-Chancellor, casts serious doubts on the integrity of her appointment and suggests potential nepotism.”

“Moreover, Nwokike’s continued use of an outdated letterhead that recognizes an Acting Vice-Chancellor indicates a lack of competence and a disregard for established procedures.”

“As we move forward, MDCAN reaffirms its commitment to collaborate with the government and ail relevant authorities to ensure the continued development and integrity of our educational institutions.”
