Fisayo Soyombo: Investigative journalist released by army

Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has been released by the Nigerian Army.

Soyombo’s release was revealed on Friday evening by one of his lawyers, Abimbola Ojenike who said that he was let go shortly after 7 pm.

Daily Sun reported that the military who spoke on the journalist’s detention said he was arrested at an oil bunkering site.

Speaking on Soyombo’s release, Ojenike stated: “He has just been released some minutes ago, and we are trying to find our way out of the cantonment.

“He is now free and has been released to his lawyers. Technically, this means that if his attention is required, his lawyers will have to produce him, but it is not a standard bail process.”

Soyombo’s detention was shared on X by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), adding that he had been in custody for three days.

“The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder, Fisayo Soyombo, for three days. Journalism is not a crime,” the FIJ post read.
