A joint security team comprising the police, military and other security agencies has on Tuesday successfully carried out an offensive operation against a suspected armed secessionist gang in Umugem road, Ufuma, Orumba North LGA of Anambra State.
The team neutralized five members of the armed group, while some others escaped with various degrees of bullet wounds.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Anambra State police command, Tochukwu Ikenga(SP) revealed this in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday.
He said, “During the operation, the security team razed down the criminal camp and recovered four undetonated improvised explosive devices (IED), two AK47 assault rifles, one pump action gun, and one 75-volt battery with other incriminating items.
“The success of the operations is attributed to the collaboration and coordination among the various security agencies, operations is still ongoing in the area for possible arrest of the fleeing gang members.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Commissioner, Nnaghe Obono Itam(CP) has sought greater cooperation of the people in the area for a patriotic involvement to take back the space and deny the criminal elements the space they use to cause tension in the State.
In another development, police operatives in the command have rescued a pregnant woman allegedly detained over a case of stealing by her husband in a security office at Okija in Ihiala LGA.
The police spokesperson said that the report of the incident was intercepted in a trending video by the Commissioner of Police, who ordered rescue operations and an investigation into the report.
The CP frowned at such acts of indiscriminate detention and inhuman treatment of suspects by some members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).
He assured that the root cause of the incidents would be addressed to avert future occurrence as he initiated necessary moves with relevant authorities to checkmate the excesses of the few unprofessional AVG members in the State.
