Tinubu mourns with Adichie over son’s death, says ‘no grief as devastating as losing a child’

President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her family following the tragic death of her young son, Nkanu Nnamdi.

Adichie had, through her spokesperson Omawumi Ogbe, announced that they lost their 21-month-old twin son, Nkanu Nnamdi, on 7 January 2026, following a brief illness. The family expressed deep devastation and requested privacy during their grief.

In a statement he personally signed on Thursday, the President commiserated deeply with Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and their loved ones, describing the loss as an unimaginable tragedy. “With a deep sense of grief, I condole with Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and the entire family on the passing of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi,” Tinubu stated.

Drawing from his own experiences as a father, President Tinubu shared the profound anguish of such a loss, adding a personal touch to his solidarity. “As a parent myself who has suffered the loss of a loved one, no grief is as devastating as losing a child,” he said, stressing the universal pain that binds parents in sorrow.

The President affirmed his emotional support for the family during this harrowing time. “I empathise with the family at this difficult time, and I mourn this sad loss with them,” he added.

Tinubu also hailed Adichie’s stature as a global literary powerhouse whose stories have inspired millions. “Ms Adichie is a literary icon who has brought joy and light to many homes globally, and I pray she and her family find strength in the Almighty in this trying hour,” he noted.

Concluding on a note of unwavering support, the President assured the bereaved family of his ongoing prayers. “My prayers are with the family,” he said.
