Nnewi is an ancient kingdom that thrives on hard work, and their toil has always been blessed with huge human capacity and more than adequate material endowment. Nnewi people are very innovative in whatever they do, and they remain the true pathfinders. The Nnewi people embody the creativity in commerce and industry, in addition to boldness, remiscent in the Igbo ethos other ethnic groups might admire in awe with sufficient dose of enviness occasionally.
Goinng down the memory lane, Nnewi have had the privilege of producing iconic names in private and public sectors that were pride of the Igbo nation and Nigeria at large. Some of the iconic names of Nnewi extraction are Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Dr. Akweke Nwafor Orizu (Nigeria’s first Senate and acting President of Nigeria who handed over to the military government), Chief Z.C. Obi, and Chief Okonkwo Kano,
Others are Ekene dili Chukwu (Transportation magnate and multi business leader), Chief LNE Nsoedo (co-founder of Onitsha Amalgamated Traders Association [OMATA] and pioneer Chairman of the Association), former Ohanaeze Ndigbo President, Dr Dozie Ikedife) Chief MCK Ajulychukwu; D.D. Onyemeluke; Ibeto Group ( manufacturing, oil and gas, etc.) Innoson group ( vehicle manufacturing, petrochemical, etc.). Coscharis group (high-end vehicle dealership, manufacturing, etc, Chicason group (vegetable oil, oil and gas, etc.
In the academia, public service, and professional practitioners, Nnewi people are very dominant. The first female head of federal service is from Nnewi, Engr Ebele Okeke CFR, as well as the first female Governor in Nigeria Dame Virgy Etiaba; Professor ABC Nwosu, Dr Chu Okongwu, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, etc
Nnewi ranks among the top three in the highest concentration of professors and Senior Advocate of Nigeria; and there are many more categories to consider in future.
The anchor that stabilizes the town is the traditional institution. From time to time, there arose issues of high magnitude, Nnewi people always resolve such without violence, allowing the impartiality of the traditional to address the the matter dispassionatly.
The Nnewi development in human and material resources have escalated under the leadership of HRH Igwe Dr KON Orizu III, who has led with deep humility and peaceful accommodation. Igwe Nnewi has been the leading cheer leader for business and human development growth in the town, with robust support from the three Obis of Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi. The political process and practices have become murky that majority of the people are fed up with the manner it is played.
