THE STRUGGLE IN NNEWICHI MUST CONTINUE — Prof. Obi Nwosu

By Don Peter Okoro JP

UN Eminent Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and former Dean Faculty of Medicine Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Obi Nwosu has submitted that the protest and struggle by the Nnewichi Quarter of Nnewi, Anambra State must continue.

He made this clear last Sunday after the monthly meeting of the Nnewi Solution Team which took place at the residence of Chief Gabriel Chukwuma. Speaking to a group of reporters who accosted him after the meeting, he said when asked if it was proper for Nnewichi to pull out of Nzuko Ora:”

I think that’s the right thing to do. If you are protesting against something, it is better you continue protesting till the end of the day. The action of Obi George Onyekaba, Obi Nnewichi, is wonderful and commendable. It is in order that he should no longer be represented at the meeting of Nzuko Ora. The full meaning of Nzuko Ora is Nzuko Ora na Eze. He is the Eze of one of the Quarters and that quarter is being marginalized, so he has the right to protest”.

Asked if this will not ignite the quest for autonomous community, he replied that the issue of autonomous community has been put to rest by a Supreme Court judgment stopping autonomous communities in Anambra State. On what this pulling out of Nzuko Ora portends, he answered:”” In any environment, there will continue to be struggle, until what is right is done. The people of Nnewichi will continue piling pressure on the Governor to see reasons for better understanding of the situation.

“So far, the story has been one sided. The Governor has been hearing from one side, he has not heard from the other side. Now, we have to go back to our own drawing board and see how we can repackage ourselves to the Governor so that he can also hear from us.”. On whether pulling out of Nzuko Ora not give the cabal an advantage, he posited: “I don’t see it that way, because protest is allowed in any part of the world. Civil rights protest Peaceful protest and so on are allowed. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no cabal anywhere. It’s an assemblage of people who are enjoying their booties.

They have planned this for a long time. They bought the voters and succeeded in selecting one of their own. So they are enjoying what they worked for. It’s a case of someone investing and you cannot tell him how he would reap his investment. And this issue brings us to the point that the position of the President General of Nzuko Ora should no longer be an all comers affair. Before you can be considered for election, you must be an Employer of labour or have something meaningful you are doing. This is very important. Thank you.””
