Three children have been confirmed dead, while another is battling for survival at an alleged Ezenwanyi shrine in Umuoduba Village, Ideani, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command disclosed that the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, prompting a swift response from police operatives attached to the Ogidi Police Division.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the rescue team rushed the four victims to a hospital for emergency treatment.
However, medical doctors certified three of the children dead, while the fourth child remains in critical condition.
The police also confirmed that a woman has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Ikenga said the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has taken over the case and will conduct a thorough, intelligence-driven and evidence-based investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
He expressed optimism that the surviving child, upon recovery and medical clearance, may provide vital information that could assist investigators.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The command extended its condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Ideani community, urging residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and allow investigators to complete their work.
