Again, Police summon Ajaero, NLC general secretary

The Nigeria Police Force has called the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja, to appear at their headquarters on September 5, 2024.

This new summons comes just a day after Ajaero had responded to a previous police invitation about serious allegations, including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treason, subversion, and cybercrime.

This time, the NLC leaders are being asked to answer questions about criminal intimidation, actions that could disturb public peace, and damaging property.

The police invitation was issued by the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and was signed on August 28, 2024, by Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ibitoye Rufus Alajide, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police.

The letter states: “As part of our investigation into criminal intimidation, actions likely to cause public unrest, and property damage in which your name is mentioned, you are requested to come with Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja for an interview at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) Complex in Abuja on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 11 a.m. Please call Usman on 08039659139 when you arrive. Your cooperation is appreciated.”

This follows a previous police summons on August 19, where Ajaero was asked to appear the next day or face arrest.

Ajaero, through human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), explained to the Inspector General of Police that he couldn’t attend on that date but promised to come on August 29, which he did, along with Falana, other lawyers, and labor leaders, to address the allegations.
