Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr John Abang, has ordered a full scale investigation into the clash between Urum and Achalla Communities, both in Awka North Local Government area.
A statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Haruna Mohammed, said the Command received a distress call that some youths in large number, allegedly from Achalla, invaded Urum Community with offensive weapons and razed down three buildings, damaged other buildings by destroying louvre glasses and other structures.
The statement said following the distress call, the Command quickly dispatched joint Police team and other Conventional Units led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in Charge of Operations, Mr David Iloyanomon, which brought the situation under control.
It further said that joint patrol is still ongoing to restore normalcy in the affected areas, while extent of damage and injuries sustained have not yet been ascertained.
The statement added that the Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, to carry out discreet investigation in order to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident and bring perpetrators to book.
Recall that on the fifteenth of last Month, the Commissioner of Police summoned all stake holders in the two warring Communities over the looming crisis concerning land dispute which both Communities are laying claim of ownership.
The Commissioner of Police waded into the matter and warned both parties to maintain peace and explore all legal avenues to resolve their grievances without resorting to violence.
However, despite the Commissioner of Police’s intervention and warnings, the two warring communities on twenty seventh of last Month, engaged themselves in a fight over the same land matter.
