Embrace inclusivity, persons with disabilities tell newly elected Anambra LGA chairmen, councillors

From Ifeoma Ejiofor

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Anambra State Chapter, the umbrella body representing all six disability clusters in the state has appealed to the newly elected council chairmen and councillors to embrace inclusivity.

The appeal was contained in their congratulatory message to the local government chairmen and councillors in the state signed by the chairman, Comrade Ugochukwu Ernest C. Okeke.

JONAPWD extended her heartfelt congratulations to the elected council officials in the local government areas and wards noting that their achievement in securing the esteemed offices is a testament to their dedication to public service and the trust placed in them by the citizens.

The message reads, “As you begin this important journey, we urge you to prioritize inclusivity and representation for every member of our society. In particular, we respectfully request that you appoint persons with disabilities as Special Assistants on disability matters.

“Their unique experiences and insights will greatly enrich the policymaking process, ensuring that the needs of individuals with disabilities are fully considered and addressed in local governance.

“By involving persons with disabilities in your decision-making, you will not only uphold principles of equity and justice but also empower a vital segment of our population whose perspectives can positively impact governance.

“This will also serve as a key step in fulfilling Section 52, Subsection 1 of the Anambra State Disability Rights Law, 2018, which mandates the encouragement of persons with disabilities to participate fully in politics and public life without discrimination.

“We are confident that, with your leadership, we can build truly inclusive and accessible communities across our local government areas. We wish you success in your new roles and look forward to the positive changes you will bring.”
