The Deputy Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Mr Obini Obini has stressed the need for life insurance to be instituted for practicing journalists.
Obini made this call on Thursday during the monthly congress of the Anambra State council of NUJ.
He pointed out that journalists by the nature of their jobs face serious risks and that there is urgent need to Institute life insurance schemes for the practioneers.
“Let me tell you the truth, many journalists are on freelance arrangements with their employers for many years. They face untold hardship in the day to day activities as journalists.
“If a journalist is missing, the only benefit he may get is that the news of the sudden disappearance would be flashed in the front pages of newspapers. This is certainly not enough.” Obini Obini pointed out.
The Deputy Registrar of Federal Polytechnic Oko also urged the Anambra State council of NUJ to close ranks and support the newly elected chairman, Mr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu
He said emphatically that without peace and unity among the practioneers, no one would take the journalists serious.
Obini Obini expressed the optimism that Anambra State council of NUJ under the chairmanship of Odogwu Emeka Odogwu would take the council to her pride of place.
The Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Prof Charles Okechukwu Esimone, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Anambra State Police Command, Ikenga Tochukwu(DSP) and other stakesholders expressed their unflinching support for the new leadership of NUJ in Anambra State.
