FG plans 6m-tonnes LPG boost for clean energy transition

As part of efforts to deepen the use of cleaner, more sustainable energy across the country, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) marketers have set an ambitious goal to raise Nigeria’s annual supply to six million metric tonnes in the coming years.

Outgoing President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Oladapo Olatunbosun, announced the target  at the association’s 38th Annual General Meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Olatunbosun said the country’s LPG consumption had grown significantly, from about 900,000 metric tonnes four years ago to over two million metric tonnes in 2024,

According to him, the feat reflects the sector’s resilience and growing public acceptance of gas as a domestic energy source.

“By the grace of God, national consumption has risen to about two million metric tonnes, and by the first quarter of next year, we expect it6m to reach three million tonnes annually.

“With continued collaboration under the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative, our goal of hitting six million tonnes per annum is achievable, he stated.

He explained that sustained policy support, private sector investment, and improved infrastructure would be key to meeting the target, adding that the milestone would place Nigeria on par with other leading African gas markets like Egypt and Morocco.

Olatunbosun expressed optimism that the lingering challenges of high cooking gas prices and supply fluctuations would ease soon, citing increased production from the Dangote Refinery, Seplat Energy, and other domestic gas facilities. He said these developments would strengthen supply, stabilise prices, and make LPG more affordable for Nigerian households, as rural communities still face limited access to gas due to poor infrastructure.

“Affordability is critical. Every Nigerian household deserves access to LPG. We must keep pressing for mechanisms and investments that guarantee steady supply and price stability,” he added.

He urged the incoming NALPGAM leadership to build on recent progress, strengthen partnerships with regulators, and prioritise investments that expand access across all regions.

Olatunbosun also called on operators to embrace technology to tackle product leakage, theft, and operational risks.
