The Anambra State government said it will not hesitate to clampdown on, ban or indeed prosecute any masquerade that flouts public peace.
The Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr Donatus Nduka Onyeji stated this in Awka.
He said as a matter of fact that government has since 2024 released a guideline and directive to masquerade groups and communities across the State.
“For avoidance of doubt; it is important to reinstate the state government’s position and guidelines on masquerading in Anambra State.
“No masquerade group should embark on any unruly behavior causing harm to abiding citizens or disrupting peace in any part of the State.
“All masquerade groups must go and perform at the designated community space or square and should not cause traffic jam or embarrass motorists and other citizens.
“All law enforcement agencies, community leaders especially President Generals of various communities, and Traditional Rulers are hereby reminded of their responsibilities in this regard, therefore are requested to ensure compliance,” Mr Onyeji stated.
He reiterated the fact that the Anambra State governor, Prof Charles Soludo is a man of culture and tradition who supports masquerading but must conducted responsibly.
Mr Onyeji said that the need to conduct cultural activities in responsible manner has become imperative because of the fact that the State has become a destination point culture, tourism, leisure and entertainment.
“Already, some of the masquerades and their groups which have defied this order have been arrested and facing the law, please let us promote our cultural heritage and traditions in the most decent and interesting fashion.” He asserted.
