The Governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano has recounted the
sad experiences of Ndi Anambra in the area of insecurity pre-Willie
Obiano administration.
The Governor said that due to the high insecurity in the state at the
time, he would normally visit Anambra with about thirty-two mobile
police escorts as Executive Director of Fidelity Bank.
Governor Obiano said this during an online zoom conference yesterday,
August 11th, 2020, organised by Nigeria Governors Forum and Professor
Pat Utomi led-Centre for Values in Leadership, CVL.
Chibuzor Obidike reports that the theme of the conference which featured other state Governors and
members of the public was “Insecurity and Governance Challenges in
Nigeria”.
Recounting his achievement in security, the governor noted that upon
his assumption of office, armed robbery was rampant such that hoodlums write their victims before the operations.
He also said that kidnapping for ransom was a major Challenge which
scared away investors and kept Ndi Anambra from visiting home.
He noted that his administration swung into action with the
establishment of Anambra Vigilante services to provide the security
agencies with intelligent information in the localities.
The Governor said that his administration has so far donated over
eight hundred vehicles to the police and other security agencies to
aid their crime fighting, alongside gun boats for river patrol.
While making emphasis on his continuous support to the state security
agencies, Chief Obiano pointed out that the security agencies are well
taken care of, to ensure their commitment.
He added that the state has also invested in digital crime fighting
techniques and can now track digitally suspects from a central command centre.
Reacting on the peaceful resolution between farmers and herdsmen, the
Governor said that the state has set up a Committee that resolves such
conflicts.
Governor Obiano said that part of what has helped the
security situation in Anambra state is the street light project the
state has embarked on which has so far covered over three quarters of
Anambra communities.
