Igboho Urges FG To Free Kanu, Drop Treasonable Charges Against IPOB Leader

Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Monday urged President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

He also pleaded that treasonable charges preferred against Kanu should be dropped so that he could attend to his failing health.

In a video circulating on social media, Adeyemo contended that Kanu was just an agitator fighting for the South East region just like himself who is agitating for the interest of the South West.

He stated: “Please release Nnamdi Kanu, stop politics. This guy did not do anything. Today is February 26, 2024. Release him, let him go and stay with his family. This guy is just fighting for his people in the South East like me that I am fighting for my people in Yoruba land, release him, let him go. Release Kanu. Please release him.”

Recall that Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had on Monday said his client suffering from heart disease, needed immediate proper medical attention which can only be accessed in a standard hospital.

Ejimakor reportedly informed journalists after his team applied for Kanu’s bail at the Federal High Court in Abuja, that it was obvious medical facilities with the Department of State Security Service (DSS) could not provide the needed treatment for the IPOB leader, stressing that his client’s health was deteriorating.

According to him, “From the medical reports made available to us, which we fighting a cause, his health is not too wonderful. He needs proper medical attention and it is obvious that in the DSS hospital where he is detained, they do not have the capacity or the enough facilities to handle the situation. You know, you can imagine the situation where samples of his blood had been taken over 25 times, you know, and yet there’s no cure in sight.

“We have also brought in an independent medical practitioner who also examined him and came up with the conclusion that the situation he is having right now can lead to heart failure. We know that they may not be able to have the facilities to treat such conditions, “Ejimakor posited.

However, the prosecuting team led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), which replaced David Kaswe, a lawyer with the Federal Ministry of Justice, urged the court to dismiss the bail application.

Awomolo argued that the DSS has the medical facilities required to take care of the IPOB leader’s health.

The presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, subsequently adjourned the ruling on the application for bail till March 19, 2024.
