Masquerades, revelers get code of conduct in Anambra

The Anambra State government has issued out directives to masquerades, revelers and accompanying group on operational mode.

The need for the code of conduct arose because of complaints received from citizens regarding the disruptive and harmful masquerade festivals and other celebrations in the state.

The State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Don Nduka Onyeji in a press statement said that the government is concerned about the compliant from the citizens.

He said, “While the government fully support the preservation and celebration of our rich cultural heritage, we strongly condemn the reported acts of violence, extortion and public disturbances perpetrated under the guise of the festival.

“Specifically, there have been alarming report of physical assault on innocent citizens, motorists, tricycle operators, disruption of public peace causing fear and panic amongst residents.

“These actions are unlawful and unacceptable, it is contrary to existing laws in Anambra State for masquerades or any individual to harass, or extort members of the public. Masquerades are expected to operate within designated areas where they can freely express their culture without infringing on the rights and safety of others.

“In the light of the above, the government hereby issue the following directives; All President General of Town Unions and Traditional rulers are urged to immediately rein in the masquerade groups and their followers ensuring they operate within the bounds of the law.

“Security agencies have been put on high alert to arrest and prosecute any masquerade, individual engaging in violence, extortion and public disorder.

“Community leaders are advised to sensitize their youths and masquerade groups on the need for peaceful and lawful celebrations.”

Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism said that government will not tolerate any further breach of peace.
