The 2023 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association will hold in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, TheNigeriaLawyer can reliably report.
The decision was made by the National Executive Committee of the Association at its ongoing National Executive Council meeting.
The meeting which was Chaired by the NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau SAN deliberated on issues affecting the Bar and the Nation in general.
On the controversy surrounding the request of the NBA President for the recusal of the former President of the association and Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Wole Olanipekun, the NEC reportedly had a divided view. While Chief Olisa Agbakoba, Dr. Monday Ubani and others shared the believe that wisdom should be applied in dealing with the issue, others insisted that sentiment, tribalism, should be jettisoned.
According to the Chairman of NBA Asaba branch, the issue cannot be treated with levity.
Ogoja branch Chairman, Lazarus A. Izabi-Undie appealed that elders of the Bar be made to participate with the NBA to take a position on the matter.
The NEC also considered the alleged creation of a parallel lawyer body in the country. The Warri branch Chairman, moved a motion to penalise members sponsoring registration of the pararell association. While seconding the motion, the Chairman of Keffi branch added that Nimi Jackson, a former general secretary of the association be sanctioned for his role.
The meeting climaxed with the ratification of all the names of NBA representatives sent to the Body of Benchers including the name of the immediate past President of the NBA, Olumide Akpata Esq.
Aside adoption of various committee reports, the NEC meeting also co-opted 150 lawyers as members of NEC. Notable names on the co opted list includes, the Registrar General of corporate affairs commission, ICPC Chairman, DG legal aid council, Chairman of lawyers with disability etc.
The National Executive Council, NEC also resolved that the next Annual conference of the Association will hold in Abuja from 25th August to 1st September 2023.
NBA Conference Incident Investigation Committee also identified the faces of the persons alleged to be lawyers who vandalized and looted conference materials.
