The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, is set to be flown abroad for medical treatment following injuries he sustained during an attack in Imo State.
Ajaero was in Owerri on Wednesday to mobilize workers for a protest against alleged abuse of labour rights by the state government. However, the planned rally turned violent when thugs and police emerged and assaulted protesters including the NLC president.
Speaking on Thursday, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah revealed Ajaero’s injuries could not be treated locally at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri due to their severity. Therefore, arrangements are being made to fly him overseas for proper medical care.
The NLC president had mobilized Imo workers to demonstrate against violations of their privileges and rights by the state government. But the protest was disrupted by Police and hoodlums who descended on labour leaders leaving Ajaero seriously wounded.
The NLC is yet to provide full details of Ajaero’s medical condition. But the decision to move him abroad underscores the gravity of the injuries he suffered during the attack by thugs in Owerri.
Stakeholders have condemned the assault on the workers’ protest in Imo. The NLC is demanding accountability and preventing a reoccurrence of such attacks on labour activities nationwide.
