A disturbing incident of police brutality has shaken Anambra South, as a physically challenged individual who contested for councillor of Otolo Ward 1 under the YPP platform was allegedly assaulted by the Nigeria Police. Led by OC RRS Nnewi Chidubem Mathew, the police in attempt to vacate the premises with sensitive electoral materials to unknown destination reportedly released two canisters of tear gas while the harmless victim was seated in a wheelchair.
The Anambra South Youth Association, led by Bar. Peter Ekwueme, has swiftly condemned this heinous act, petitioning the Inspector General of Police, House Committee on Human Rights, Secretary General of the Federation, and Police Service Commission. Fortunately, these agencies have acknowledged the petition, paving the way for a potential investigation ยน.
According to eyewitnesses, the police’s unwarranted use of force resulted in the victim inhaling excessive tear gas, compromising his already fragile health. This egregious abuse of power has sparked widespread outrage, with many demanding justice for the victim and accountability from the perpetrators.
The incident has also raised concerns about electoral malpractice, as results were allegedly announced and a winner declared in polling units where elections did not take place. This blatant disregard for democratic processes has cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the elections.
The Anambra South Youth Association has vehemently denounced the police’s actions, emphasizing that their role is to protect citizens, not intimidate or harm them. The association is urging authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring the offending officers to justice.
The people of Anambra South are united in their demand for justice, calling for swift action against those responsible. The incident has sparked fears about the safety and well-being of physically challenged individuals in the community.
As the investigation unfolds, concerns about police brutality and electoral malpractice will continue to simmer. The Anambra South Youth Association remains committed to advocating for the rights of the victim and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
In conclusion, this disturbing incident highlights the need for greater accountability and protection of human rights in Anambra South which the community said they would be watching closely as the investigation progresses, seeking justice for the victim and a safer, more equitable society for all.
