Why we must invest in education, health – Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has said Nigeria must invest in education and the health sectors to secure future of the country.

The former Anambra State governor, who made a N10 million donation to the Holy Rosary School of Nursing, maintained that investment in education and health sectors is indispensable.

He said this when he visited Holy Rosary School of Nursing, Emekuku, Owerri on Saturday.

Obi pointed out that with a life expectancy of 55 years, Nigerians need to make critical investments in its health sector, especially through the training and education of young persons to manage the system in the future. He pledged his support to ensure that the school achieves its objective of becoming a university of medical sciences.

“With a life expectancy of 55 years, we have certainly deteriorated, and must therefore, invest in health with our youths as the most important targets for this investment.

“The most important person, the closest to a patient in the hospital, is the nurse, hence, investment in nurses and nursing students alike, is critical to us,” he said.

The Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, thanked Obi for the visit and for his continued support, while stating that the campus would serve as takeoff for the proposed university.

He described Obi as a detribalised proper citizen and role model with character, competence, capacity and simplicity.

He extolled Obi’s leadership qualities, and enjoined well-meaning Nigerians to tow his path.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of a cheque of N10 million by Obi to the archbishop and management team of the institution in solidarity.
