“Will Keep Sitting” — Activist Yesufu Defends Stance On Nigeria’s Anthem Change

Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has stirred up a heated debate after a video of her sitting during the recitation of the new national anthem at an event went viral on social media.

The human rights advocate has now addressed the controversial video, stating that she only recognizes ‘Arise, O Compatriots’ as the sole national anthem of Nigeria.

In her response, Yesufu criticized lawmakers for prioritizing trivial issues over pressing matters such as the country’s declining GDP and inadequate security. She maintained her stance on not acknowledging the ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ anthem, emphasizing that she will continue to sit down if it is played at any event.

As far as I’m concerned, there’s only one national anthem. I’m going to sit down if the ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ anthem is played at any event,” Yesufu stated firmly.

The activist’s actions have ignited a nationwide discussion on the importance of the national anthem and the role of citizens in respecting national symbols. While some have praised Yesufu for her bold stance, others have criticized her for disrespecting the country’s new anthem.
