The xenophobic unofficial policy driven by some South African citizens against fellow African residents has resulted in African countries fans rooting for Mexico to win.
Many of these fans who had made different caricatures on Facebook and WhatsApp drumming up support for Mexican team against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa did not relent even as the match got tough for both teams.
During the match proper, many African fans were commenting brutally against the performance of South African team, both on social media and viewing centers.
The anger of many Nigerians could be understood because of the arrival of plane load of first batch of Nigerian returnees. If the government of South Africa fails to mend fences with the affected African countries, soon or later South African citizens will become persona non grata in most of the African countries.
