30-year-old Delta man shot dead over land dispute

A 30-year-old man, Onyinye Onwuka, has been shot dead following a scuffle over a land that has been in dispute between Obodogwugwu and Ugbolu communities in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The PUNCH gathered that the victim, who was from Idigbe-Ocha quarters, Obodogwugwu in Okpanam community, was shot dead on Sunday by some yet-to-be-identified men.

A community source said the deceased was shot during an altercation with youths suspected to be from Ugbolu, a neighbouring community.

“There has been a lingering land dispute between Obodogwugwu and Ugbolu communities which has gone unresolved for several years.

“Four years ago, the people of Ugbolu took the matter concerning the ownership of the land to court and lost the suit to Idigbe-Ocha quarters, Okpanam,” the source said.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, on Monday, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations had commenced on the matter but no arrest had been made.

The police spokesperson said, “The information we got is that the man was killed over land matter, for now, no arrest has been made but our men are on top of the situation to arrest the perpetrators.”
