Democracy day: FG declares June 12 as public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, a public holiday to mark Democracy Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the government said June 12 remains an important day in Nigeria’s history.

According to the statement, the day honours the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts helped make democratic governance possible in the country.

“Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” the government said.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

“The administration has pledged to uphold these principles without compromise.

“The Ministry of Interior, in coordination with relevant security agencies, will continue to maintain and strengthen internal security measures to protect lives and property across the country,” Dr Tunji-Ojo said.

The minister said a secure and stable environment is necessary for democracy and national development.

He called on Nigerians to use the holiday as a time for reflection and urged citizens to recommit themselves to lawful conduct, responsible engagement and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.
