EFCC detains Emefiele after release by DSS

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for interrogation and preparation for a fresh round of prosecution.

Saturday Sun learnt that Emefiele, who is currently assisting the EFCC operatives with their enquiries, was picked up on Thursday night, less than an hour after he was released by the Department of State Services (DSS).

It was further gathered that the former CBN Chief was being primed to be docked once the investigation is over.

Emefiele was arrested and detained by the DSS in June after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, who insisted the apex bank needed to be cleaned up and reset.

He was later arraigned on July 25 on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a Federal High Court in Lagos and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

The two-count charge was later struck out on August 17 after the federal government withdrew the charge.

A fresh 20-count charge was later instituted against him over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.

The arraignment was stalled twice.

However, on September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation after Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as substantive governor of the apex bank, though initially in an acting capacity.
