Anambra State on Tuesday evening issued a flood alert to all residents following a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which listed Anambra as one of the states likely to experience above-normal flooding this year due to its location within the delta belt.
The alert was contained in a press statement signed by the duo of Commissioner for Environment, Clem Aguiyi and Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor PhD.
The government, while assuring that proactive steps are being taken to mitigate the impact of the anticipated flooding, calls on Ndi Anambra to prioritise personal and collective safety throughout the rainy season.
Residents strongly advised to remain vigilant and take the NiMET prediction seriously throughout the rainy season, avoid unnecessary movements during heavy downpours, whether on foot or by vehicle; and take all necessary precautionary measures to ensure personal safety, including relocating from flood-prone areas where necessary and seeking help promptly during emergencies.
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and solicits maximum cooperation from the public.
Recall that earlier on Tuesday, rescuers made up of Nibo Vigilante Group Strike Force rescued nine school children, while one child was still missing during a flood disaster at Nibo in Awka South LGA of the State.
