IPOB raises Kanu’s detention at US civil society forum

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) said its delegation participated in a U.S. civil society event in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, to present the “Cole-Moore Recommendations” and to highlight concerns over human rights and security in Nigeria.

In a press statement issued, yesterday, by its Spokesperson, Emmanuel Powerful, IPOB said the Head of its 4th Directorate of State, Mazi Chris Nwaogu, attended alongside legal counsel, Mike Arnold, Dr. Green, and other representatives.

The group said the high-level meeting, which focused on Nigeria, brought together members of Congress, policy experts, faith leaders, and civil society organisations.

IPOB said the discussions centered on: escalating attacks against Christian communities in Nigeria, persecution of vulnerable ethnic populations, growing insecurity across the country, and the need for increased international engagement.

IPOB said its delegation also raised the continued detention of its leader, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The group referenced “widespread concerns” over the circumstances of his extraordinary rendition and what it called implications for due process, human rights, and the rule of law.

The statement reiterated IPOB’s stated position of seeking “a peaceful, democratic, and internationally recognised resolution of the Biafra question through dialogue and the exercise of the universally recognised right of self-determination.”

IPOB thanked the event organisers and participants for “raising awareness about the plight of persecuted communities in Nigeria,” and said it is encouraged by “growing international interest” in issues affecting people of the former Eastern Region.

The group said it will continue engaging with U.S. policymakers, faith-based organisations, civil society, and international partners “in pursuit of freedom, security, and justice for our people.”
