It was a black Thursday in Anambra state as unknown gunmen kill and burn; Hon Chris Azubogu is alive and safe

By E. Emmanuel Nsoedo

Nigerians were shocked and outraged as Dr. Chike Akunyili and others were killed just few days in Umoji in Idemili South LGA on their way home following an award event honoring the late Dora Akunyili.

That was to be a precursor to the Thursday multiple attacks. Vision Newspapers can authoritatively confirm that Ajali police station in Orumba North LGA was attacked, and set on fire. At least six people suspected to be policemen were dead.

Two men who were putting on black outfits were said to have been killed by the military. Vision Newspapers could not confirm if indeed the military or the unknown gunmen was responsible.

The locals who could be seen on video trying unsuccessfully to put off the fire could be heard shouting that some people were trapped inside the burning police station.

Hon Chris Azobogu’s convoy was brutally attacked near St Paul Anglican Church in Nnobi. Hon Azubogu’s driver and an aid were brutally killed.

Initially, some people alleged that the gunmen abducted Hon Chris Azubogu. Vision Newspapers has since confirmed that Hon Azubogu is safe in Abuja. Hon Azubogu is, however, very distraught about the loss of his aids.

Vision Newspapers also learned that two people lost their lives when the unknown gunmen attacked them on Awka Etiti/Isseke express road, between Utuh and Ukpor in Nnewi South LGA.

Several gunshots rang from several locations, but no one could confirm which side was firing, whether the security agency or the unknown gunmen. Speculations abound, but many people confided to our reporters that the unknown gunmen would be out in full force on October 1.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Anambra State police command, Ikenga Tochukwu (DSP), could not pick his call when our correspondent called him several times to get the police angle of the report.

Ifeoma Ejiofor contributed to the story.
