An early morning building collapse on Thursda at Emeka Ugwuanyi Street, Anata-Anaba, Okpoko in Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State has claimed the life of a mother and her daughter.
Mrs Happiness Ugagu and her daughter Miss Confidence Chiamaka Uguagu died in the incident before help could get to them.
The site of the building collapse has been sealed up by officials of Anambra State government even as people are still trooping to the place at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ogbaru LGA, Chief Hon. Nnamdi Ifejika (SINGA), has expressed deep sadness and heartfelt condolences to the family of the victims.
Chief Ifejika described the early morning disaster which claimed the life of mother and child as tragic.
Chief Ifejika personally led a team from the Council area to the scene, where he assessed the situation, engaged the residents and those involved in the rescue operation.
He said that the incident is a painful tragedy that has brought unimaginable sorrow to the affected family and the wider community.
“This is a very painful and heartbreaking moment for us as a people. We cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing a mother and her daughter in such a tragic circumstance. Our hearts are with the family of Mrs. Happiness Ugagu at this very difficult time,” he said.
The Ogbaru LGA Chairman commended residents, first responders and other individuals who mobilised to the scene in the immediate aftermath of the collapse, stressing the importance of coordinated action in protecting lives and assisting those who may still require help.
He directed that the situation be closely monitored and that the appropriate authorities and relevant agencies be engaged to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Chief Ifejika also emphasised the need for heightened vigilance concerning the structural integrity of buildings within the local government, particularly structures that may pose risks to residents and the surrounding communities.
