Onitsha fire disaster: CLO calls for probe


The Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) has appealed to Anambra State governor, Prof. Charles Soludo and Commissioner of Police in the state Mr. Echeng Echeng to order for discreet and indepth investigation to unravel the circumbstances surrounding the despicable, pitiable and painful fire disaster at Onitsha Drug market in order to forestall future occurrence.

The group who decried and lamented over the horrendous and condemnable chemical explosion that took place at Ogbogwu section of Bridge Head Market that led to deaths of some traders and injured and hospitalized others.

The Chairman of Anambra State Chapter of CLO Mr. Vincent Ezekwueme in his reaction to the fire incident sympathized and identified with the bereaved, victims and all those who lost their goods, properties, as well as market leadership and President General of Bridge Head Markets, Hon. Chinedu Ezekwike.

“We appeal to Federal Emergency Management Agency, State Emergency Management Agency, political class and public spirited individuals and stakeholders to contributes toward ameliorating pathetic predicament of the victims.

“Worthy of commendation is the quick intervention of Anambra state government through the Deputy Governor Dr. Onyeka Ibezim. Fire Fighting Services led by Dr. Martin Agbili and security personnel for beefing up security and restored normalcy.

“May God accept the souls of those who lost their lives and for God give grace and fortitude to the bereaved to bear and endure the irreparable loss.

“We appeal to government and markets leadership to device more proactive safety and security measures in our markets” Ezekwueme said.
