U.S. preparing new Iran strikes as Trump says, “We’ve done an amazing job”

What to know about the Iran war today:

The United States and Israel are planning what would be one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date against energy infrastructure targets in Iran, multiple sources told CBS News, with strikes possible throughout the weekend.President Trump opened a Cabinet meeting on Friday saying the U.S. has done an “amazing job” with the war in Iran, going back to the refrain that wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Korea were longer. “Iran is doing very poorly,” he added.Investigators are probing whether malicious cyber activity that affected water systems in at least seven states this week, including Minnesota, is the work of Iranian hackers, according to U.S. officials and sources familiar with the incident.

Tanker struck by “unknown projectile” off Oman, U.K. marine agency says

A tanker was struck by an “unknown projectile” off the coast of Oman, a British maritime agency said on Saturday, as the United States and Iran vie for control of the Strait of Hormuz.

The vessel reported it was “struck by an unknown projectile which has caused damage to the engine room”, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said, adding no injuries were reported in the incident around 12.5 miles off the coast of Lima, Oman.

Trump claims the “success we’re having with Iran” contributed to the Hamas deal

During his Cabinet meeting Friday, President Trump told reporters he believed the war with Iran helped lead to a deal reached this week that is designed to see the disarmament of the Gaza-based militant group Hamas, a longtime Iranian proxy.

“Nobody’s ever thought that would be possible to disarm Hamas,” Mr. Trump said. “That shows you how much success we’re having with Iran. Because if you go four months ago or five months ago, a deal like that would have been impossible. So, it’s a big step for the Middle East, and people are really impressed by it.”

Mr. Trump referred to the deal, which was put together by his international Board of Peace, as a “great breakthrough.”

“Now, will it go through its ups and downs? It’s a very complex situation over there. People are very complex and difficult,” Mr. Trump said.

U.S., Israel preparing to bombard energy-related targets in Iran, sources say

The United States and Israel are likely to launch what may be the harshest bombing campaign to date against energy infrastructure targets in Iran, multiple sources told CBS News, with strikes possible throughout the weekend.

There was some discussion about trying to conclude by the time financial markets open Monday because of concern about how the bombings will affect the U.S. and global economy, but an end point wasn’t locked in.

The Israelis have been notified and are coordinating with the United States.

The joint operation would mark Israel’s return to combat operations which it had halted during the U.S.-brokered truce. Iran has not hit Israel since the memorandum of understanding fell apart and the U.S. restarted combat operations in early July.
