US based philanthropist institutes scholarship scheme for best science student in Nnewi

From Ifeoma Ejiofor

History was made at Anglican Girls Secondary School Nnewi, Anambra State on Friday as a United States of America (USA) based philanthropist, Dr Mrs Sussan.
Odunukwe instituted a scholarship scheme for the best science student in the school.

Mrs Odunukwe was an old student of the school.

The scholarship is in memory of Pharmacist Ijeoma Donna Egemonye who died five years ago.

The representative of the philanthropist, Chief (Barr) Oseloka Osuigwe, who is also the manager of the scholarship scheme, noted that the scheme was meant to encourage the study of sciences at Anglican Secondary School Nnewi.

The beneficiary of the maiden edition of the scheme, Miss Mmesoma Maria Gorathy Agbedo, who hails from Enugwu-Ezike in Enugu State is the overall best JS3 science student in the 2022/23 academic year.

Chief Barr Osuigwe pointed out that the scholarship would be given to the outstanding science student annually, noting that the best graduating science student of the school who intends to study pharmacy at the University of Nigeria, Nzukka (UNN) would also be sponsored through the foundation.

The principal of the school, Mrs Nkiru Elosiuba in her comments appreciated the personalities behind the scholarship scheme.

She said as a matter of fact that she was overwhelmed by the demonstration of love of an alma mater of the school to the present crop of students.

Mrs Elosiuba said emphatically that the gesture would make the students of the school to be more studious.

The principal, however, appealed to the affluent old students of the school to borrow a leaf from Dr. Sussan Odunukwe, who still has the school’s interest at heart, not minding that she is far away from home.

Mrs Elosiuba also used the occasion to appreciate the Bishop of Nnewi Anglican Communion, Rt Rev’d Ndubuisi Obi and the Anambra State Government for the observable infrastructural and educational development of the school.

The mother of the beneficiary of the scholarship scheme, Mrs Ebere Agbedo expressed gratitude to the organizers of the scheme. She said that she was overjoyed that God has considered her daughter for what she called “Miraculous Intervention” in her family.

She prayed that the Almighty God will continue to bless the foundation and partners.

The beneficiary, Miss Mmesoma Maria Gorathy Agbedo thanked the US based philanthropist for her gesture even as she promised to continue to strive to be the best student of Anglican Secondary School Nnewi all through her stay in the school.

The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of an open check to the benefitting student.
